Welcome

Welcome to the project website for Magor Net Zero: a ‘UK-first’ green hydrogen project at Budweiser Brewing Group UK & Ireland’s Magor Brewery, South Wales.

We are developing proposals for a state-of-the-art green hydrogen production facility to support the Magor Brewery. The proposals will save thousands of tonnes of CO2 per year, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and improving local air quality.

The Project will aim to develop renewable energy locally to create green hydrogen from a new production facility.

Energy generated from renewables and green hydrogen will be used to decarbonise various elements of the brewery processes, whilst also providing the means to fuel the Brewery's Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) and forklift trucks.

We are excited to deliver this ground-breaking, ‘UK-first’ scheme which will illustrate how Wales is leading the way in reducing carbon emissions and tackling climate change.

Hydrogen is an exciting opportunity as it’s the lightest and the most abundant element in the universe, making up more than 90% of all matter. It also acts as an energy carrier and can be used as a replacement fuel to displace natural gas in residential and industrial processes as well as a substitute to diesel and petrol in vehicles. As such we believe green hydrogen will play a crucial role in supporting the transition to a decarbonised global economy.

When green hydrogen is produced entirely from renewable sources, such as solar and wind, as we are proposing, the fuel has zero greenhouse gas emissions associated and can decarbonise high temperature heat and transport needs. Green hydrogen is produced through the process of electrolysis – using electricity to split the hydrogen and oxygen, which differentiates it from the industrial gas that other businesses manufacture from fossil fuels.

We are excited to work with the local community to bring forward these proposals, and we will be undertaking extensive consultation in the areas around the site to make sure we understand local views.

This website will be updated regularly to keep you informed about the proposals and the planning and consultation process. Find out more about the proposals, hydrogen technology and the planning process by clicking the links on this website.

     Informal public consultation

We previously held an informal public consultation on our draft proposals in September 2022.

This included two in-person consultation exhibition events, including:

·        20th September 1pm- 7pm - Redwick Village Hall, Church Row, Redwick, NP26 3DE

·        24th September 10am - 4pm - Magor Baptist Church, Magor Square, Magor, NP26 3HY

Digital copies of the draft materials used for the informal consultation can still be found on the Consultation page, though please note that these documents will be superseded by statutory consultation documents.

About Magor Net Zero

Magor Net Zero is a joint project between Protium and Budweiser Brewing Group UK & I’s Magor Brewery.

Protium is a UK‐based green hydrogen energy services company (HESCO). Founded in 2019,  Protium’s mission is to enable UK industries and local government to reach zero greenhouse gas emissions.

To achieve this, Protium develops, builds and finances renewable energy and green hydrogen infrastructure to manufacture zero-emission hydrogen from water and renewables.

We focus on projects and sectors where early commercial traction is viable without relying on government grants or subsidies.

Budweiser Brewing Group UK&I is the trading name of AB InBev UK Limited, a subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch InBev, a publicly traded company (Euronext: ABI) based in Leuven, Belgium. Budweiser Brewing Group UK&I remains a proud part of AB InBev globally.

In the UK, Budweiser Brewing Group employs 1,400 people in our three breweries in Magor, South Wales, Samlesbury, Lancashire and Enfield, North London and in our local headquarters in Central London.
